For my ISTD concept I felt it was imperative that the size conventions of the page are traditional and imperial, to go along with the classical nature of the type. I researched the name and sizes of traditional and conventional book sizes. I was originally working to B6 (125 x 176mm) but the closest imperial size is 5" x 7 1/2"

Today Ben & I went to Waterstones and WHSmith to check out some Dickens. The most interesting finds were: There are way more editions/cover variations in current print than we expected, Smith's had one collection of Penguin Classics, and Waterstones had about one hundred different variations. Also there is already 200th anniversary cover editions, but I don't think that affects anything...

Two Lines English Egyptian

In 1816, William Caslon IV produced the first sans-serif printing type in England for Latin characters under the title 'Two Lines English Egyptian', where 'Two Lines English' referred to the font's body size, which equals to about 28 points. Originally cut in 1812.

Around 1816, William Caslon IV printed the first know specimen of a sans serif typeface: W CASLON JUNR LETTERFOUNDER. A complete set of matrices for captials exists in the archives of Stephenson Blake, and Miko McGinty revived these as a project in Tobias Frere-Jones's type design class at Yale. In 1998, Cyrus Highsmith refined Miko's version, giving it a more complete character set for Red Herring magazine. In 2001, they came back for a lowercase and 3 additional weights.

Below are examples of what is believed to be the Caslon san-serif, however the Cs are both different.

The influences in san-serif typefaces that that we all know and use today are obvious, but I can't think of a typeface that looks close enough to use instead. A reproduction would be necessary. The A, L, O & look dimilar to Akzidenz, but the S is similar to Futura and the C is another story... Not a fan of the one in the full alphabet, but the one in the word Caslon is pretty sweet!

The 2nd international Copenhagen Design Week was held in Copenhagen from 1st to 6th September 2011.

With the theme "Think Human", Copenhagen Design Week showed the DNA in Danish design thinking; formed and founded by the Danish human tradition that descends from our constitution and our democratic society. The human tradition has for decades been the basis for Danish product design, e.g. the well-known furniture architects of the 1950's and is now a driving force for the role of the designer in a complex world. The programme demonstrated how design can contribute solving both local and global challenges – in relation to the invididual, the society and globally.

Copenhagen Design Week brought together activities from the world's largest design award: INDEX:Award to exhibitions and conferences showing Copenhagen as a living lab of sustainable urban development. The week offered an exciting programme with exhibitions, conferences, talks, guided architecture tours etc. – all in a "Think Human" context.

CHARLES DICKENS 200TH BIRTHDAY

GENERAL RESEARCH NOTES & OUSTANDING POINTS

During mid 19th Century, he travelled to North America, and influenced their level of reading and intelectual awareness and encouraged copywriting laws.

He was fascinated by the theatre and loved seeing his work on stage.

A lot of his work championed the poor, attempting to inspire the wealthier to to encourage social changes.

He also backed and promoted the opening and functioning of hospitals, particularly for children.

During the earlier works, which were released as monthly publications, were rumoured to have changed direction in order to suit/please the public.

His works have never gone out of print to date.

As Karl Marxsaid, Dickens, and the other novelists of Victorian England, "...issued tothe world more political and social truths than have been uttered by all theprofessional politicians, publicists and moralists put together...".

From the research notable learnings are:
- London itself is a reappearing character in nearly every story
- Dickens is famous for personal quotations as well as extracts, perhaps these become part of the promotional materials
- The level of social awareness and the need for change is clearly apparent, so perhaps charity could be a beneficial factor in our design solutions.

Since the beginning we have been fully aware of this organisation/website but it shouldn't hamper our plans at all as everything they are planning is in a different direction to us, and doesn't really provoke any level of contemporary interest. Most of their events are focused our school children.

First post of the 3rd year. Recently came across the berlin website for Don't Panic and I find it amazing how much more contemporary it is in comparison to the British equivalent. Both the layout and interactivity of the site is just so much better. Having met quite a few european designers over summer I am now falling in love with European Graphic Design. At this stage I think my practice will definitely be influenced by what is going on in Germany and Scandinavia etc.
